Uses and gratifications model

• The need to reinforce a view of personal identify by comparing our own roles and values with similar roles and values represented in the media.
• The need to have companionship and interactions with others. Media being used to aid social contact.
• The need to be informed.
• The need for entertainment and diversion.
Audience - Two-step flow model
• The text does not directly go into audience’s head – it is mediated by “opinion leaders” who communicate it to those who have influence.
• Audience then received information directly from the media but influenced with the ideas and thoughts from opinion leaders rather than a direct process.

Evaluation

Evaluation Questions

For your evaluation you will have SEVEN questions to answer in a variety of formats. Therefore, it is worth knowing these now so that you can plan them into your work management.

Your COMPLETE evaluation will be in ONE post with different SECTIONS.

1. In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?
AS A GROUP you are to select:
- Two PAIRS of frames (the pair will be a key frame from yours and a key frame from a real Thriller film) where you have USED the forms and conventions of real media products
- Two PAIRS of frames where you have DEVELOPED the forms and conventions of real media products.
- Two PAIRS of frames where you have CHALLENGED the forms and conventions of real media products.
Then, INDIVIDUALLY, you are to explain HOW you either USED/DEVELOPED/CHALLENGED these. By HOW, you will need to refer to:
- Camera, Mise-en-Scene, Editing
- Sound (for this you could post two mp3s if you wished)
- Whilst also discussing HOW this works with your media product.

2. How does your media product represent particular social groups?
This is an INDIVDUAL post and is to be presented using the online application PREZI (you can make a group account and make 2/3/4 presentations on it). You must include screenshots from your video in this. You could also use images from your other video.
In this you need to
- What are the social groups represented in terms of gender, age, class, race, disability interests.etc?
- How have you presented them? Positive or negative?
- Are the social groups represented in a stereotypical way? I.e. men dominant and women passive or mentally disabled people in the role of the innocent?

3. What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?

The presentation of this will be a GROUP entry on the MEDIA STUDIES WIKI (address below) with the title being the title of your film with a link
For high PRESENTATION marks it will need to have LINKS back to your blog and other websites and IMAGES. For high CONTENT marks you will need to JUSTIFY the reasons behind your selections.
Remember to consider:
- What type of film yours is (mainstream or art-house) and how may this be affect by distribution? (Remember distribution organises exhibition).
- What themes it covers and how might that affect the distribution company?
- Convergence, vertical/horizontal integration and synergy – Who would/might you work with and why?
- Why would it be released? Does it offer opportunities for franchises, sequels or merchandising?
- Link your conclusions to a discussion of the mise en scene (visual style) of your thriller.

4. Who would be the audience for your media product?

The presentation of this will be done INDIVIDUALLY on the BLOG. You will need to include IMAGES and EMBEDDED LINKS in your piece

Create a profile of your ideal audience member – considering:

- Their age, class, gender, location
- Their hobbies, interests and pastimes (would do they do?)
- What they spend their money on
- Their beliefs and values

To get HIGH MARKS in this you need to think of all the things your audience would be interested. To get HIGH PRESENTATION marks you must include IMAGES and LINKS
5. How did you attract/address your audience?
This is a GROUP post
- You are upload your video to youtube and add multiple tags to it (careful of TIME and DURATION)
As you go through the video – point out the features that attract your audience and WHY they do (remembering always to link it to, draw attention to:
- Camera work (movement & angle)
- Editing
- Mise En Scene
- Establishment of character

For HIGH MARKS you will need to link your observations back to conventions and the creation of suspense – ALSO always make sure you discuss the IMPACT of the choices of you have made
6. What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product?
This is an INDIVIDUAL task and will involve you taking PHOTOGRAPHS of you using the equipment. You can then either:
- Annotate the photographs with text in PHOTOSHOP
- Write next to the images straight the blog.
The question is self-explanatory – it wants you to talk about what you learned about the various technologies – this includes online and offline – so may include things like: FCE, photoshop, blogging, prezi, youtube etc.

7. Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to the full product?
A GROUP TASK: Using your preliminary task you will either:
Insert text into your preliminary text in Final Cut Express and upload this to Youtube.
Or
Make notes on your uploaded preliminary task through TAGGING on youtube.
Include details on

- Your progression in planning
- Your research into genre, storyboarding and how this helped you.
- Your progression in practical work.
- Your confidence with the equipment
- How successful you have been
